fontaine is a two-faced traitor, without loyalty to anyone but himself. he hates his mother, and yearns for his father. rather intelligent but insufferably confident, he has grandiose delusions of himself, in part due to his spoiled upbringing. he is never to blame for any of his bad behavior, always pinning it on others.
he is a sadistic, mischievous, and bratty boy, but he rarely takes action through direct violence, preferring more roundabout methods. he is a diabolical emotional abuser: he actively pushes people to self-harm, and encourages self-destructive behavior. he is the definition of the phrase "catching more flies with honey than vinegar". charming, childish, and cute, he is a false friend: all he wants is attention and admiration.
alternately: he can smother someone with insincere adoration and praise, but only when he wants something from them. afterwards, he abandons them. he frequently engages in infidelity and lying, having multiple partners at once, while claiming to be monogamous. he leeches off of their finances and their affections, but he never finds happiness.
he attaches himself to anyone with power, fame, and wealth. he primarily goes after older men: initially seducing them, followed by blackmailing them if they won't indulge his every whim. but because he is very easy to overpower or intimidate, his manipulations are ineffective. for fontaine, these series of parasitical relationships end badly: in domestic violence and homelessness. but he never breaks the pattern, immediately searching for the next companion.
the most selfish lover. his many escapades never bring him true pleasure. more often than not, he exchanges sexual services for money or goods, to both men and women — however, he refuses to acknowledge his activities as prostitution. he is both promiscuous and reckless: a combination fated to end in inevitable disease.
HISTORY the bastard son from a blue-blooded family. because fontaine is illegitimate, he did not have any true position of power, but he still had private tutors, tailors, and other servants growing up. he received an advanced education, and speaks both french and english, in a very posh, measured, and deliberate manner.
he once cared for his mother, but absolutely idolized his unknown father, whom he imagined to be the ideal man: authoritative, revered, paternal, strict.
when he was a toddler, his mother tried to drown him, while struggling with post-partum psychosis. afterwards, he was sent to the countryside to be cared for by his maids.
but even they could not handle him, and he was relinquished to an orphanage. where he stays, never adopted, having lost his wealth, his prestige, and his family.
PHOBIAS WATER. due to him almost drowning, fontaine is afraid of any sort of water, in any volume, of any depth. his aquaphobia is so crippling, he washes himself by sponge baths exclusively. any water he drinks has to be from an opaque container. the mere sight of an ocean, or a pond, or a puddle, makes him physically ill. rain causes him to cower. of course, he cannot swim.
